A love letter to the book industry

Dear publishers, agents, authors, marketers, editors, publicists, booksellers, librarians, readers, designers, illustrators, …

Dear anyone who has ever read and loved a book,

I love you.

I love your passion and enthusiasm, your intelligence and wit, your charm and your smile. I love your commitment to this industry, to these things we call books. I admire your tenacity and am inspired by the desire to bring story, song, information, inspiration — knowledge — to an audience.

Because that’s what this is all about isn’t it? Love of words and images and the messages they convey. All else may change, but that remains the same.

Oh, book industry, we have had our fallings out, I know. (That Snooki thing is still a little raw for me.) But I always come back to you, and I always will. No matter how bad things get, you are there for me, with an uplifting story, a tale to take me outside myself for a while, some advice to solve the problem. I come to you — always — for insight, guidance, distraction, enlightenment, entertainment. And I come away — always — knowing more about myself.

I feel like I’ve known you forever. In some ways, I have. And we’ve grown together, matured, teetered on the edge of crash-and-burn. As we continue to grow and learn together, I hope we can make each other stronger. I hope we can work to make our business healthier and better poised for a changing marketplace.

This thing of ours: it is evolving, but it will remain ours. There will be a place here for everyone who loves books (regardless what they become).
